A Pillar of Defense in Colorado Springs

Lies can lead to sex crimes convictions

Most people in Colorado know about the age of consent and what it means when hooking up for a sexual encounter, but what if you were lied to? What if you thought someone was older than he or she really was?

This is something that has happened on numerous occasions in the United States. A story recently came out about a 19-year-old male who went online, using an app designed for dating. He met a young girl in a nearby state, just a few hours away from him. She said she was 17 years old, so he drove over to see her and they had sex.

Everything came crashing down when he found out she'd lied about her age. She wasn't 17, but 14, and as so, under the age of consent. The young man is now a registered sex offender, even though he says there is no way he would have done what he did had he known her age. He'd asked and never thought she was lying.

Interestingly, a similar case came from that young man's hometown, in which a 13-year-old girl lied about her age, and another young man was put on the sex offender registry. The same judge saw both cases.

This just goes to show that misunderstandings and even deliberate lies can lead to very real convictions that last a lifetime. That's true even if both parties agree that the lie was involved -- the girl in the first case admitted lying and asked in court for the young man not to be punished. He still was.

If you find yourself in this position in Colorado Springs, be sure you really know all of your legal options.
