Nude selfie results in teen facing felony sex crimes charges

| Feb 11, 2014 | Sex Crimes |

Young adults and teenagers have grown up during a time when information, including photographs, can be shared instantaneously via cellphones and social media websites. In many cases, however, these young individuals fail to realize the potential ramifications of their actions and may therefore share information or photographs that could potentially result in criminal charges.

The popular term selfie refers to a photograph an individual takes of oneself typically using either a cellphone or digital camera. So-called selfies have grown in popularity and many celebrities regularly post images they’ve taken of themselves on social media websites including Twitter and Instagram. For one 16-year-old girl, the act of sharing a compromising photograph of herself via Twitter has resulted in her facing criminal charges related to the distribution of child pornography.

Individuals found to be in possession of child pornography or to have distributed child pornography may face felony criminal charges. In this case, the 16-year-old admitted to taking nude photographs or selfies of herself and then sending these photos via a cellphone to some “male acquaintances” and posting the pictures on Twitter.

The girl’s actions could result in her facing felony sex crimes charges. This case shows the serious consequences that can result when unsuspecting teens post or share sexually explicit photographs or videos. In many cases, teens who engage in this type of behavior do so without knowledge that their actions are illegal.

Colorado teens or young adults who face criminal charges related to the possession or distribution of child pornography would be wise to seek the advice of a criminal defense attorney who had experience handling sex crimes matters. An attorney can provide advice and assist in helping provide for the best possible legal outcome.
