A teacher at a Greeley, Colorado, elementary school was arrested on charges of child sexual assault on May 6. The alleged victim is a former student of hers from another school in Greeley.
The 24-year-old teacher was originally charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She alleged provided the former student with marijuana. The charge is a felony. However, additional charges were added, including sexual assault on a child with a pattern of abuse and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. Both of these charges are also felonies.
According to authorities, the now-former teacher was under investigation for three weeks prior to her arrest. Allegedly, the woman carried on a sexual relationship with the 13-year-old since last summer. The woman has denied the charges, but did reportedly admit to police that the boy had slept over at her home to do homework and play video games. This started around July 2014.
Police reportedly learned from the boy about the sexual relationship, saying the first time the two had sex was in June 2014 at his house. The other members of his family were camping. According to court records, the boy told police that he and the woman had sex too many times to count, including on May 4.
The woman had posted a personal recognizance bond of $10,000 on the original charge, but her bond has since been increased to $100,000. The judge said the woman is facing a lifetime sentence in prison if she is convicted on the three charges she now faces.
Cases such as this one usually receive a large amount of media coverage, making it seem as though the court of public opinion has already found the defendant guilty. No matter what the charges someone is facing, though, he or she has a right to a fair and just trial, as well a chance to appeal a verdict viewed as unfavorable. An experienced criminal defense attorney can provide guidance and support, as well as helping you to build a strong defense case against the charges.
