Guilty plea in sex crime case by former cheerleading coach

A 23-year-old man who worked as a coach at a Colorado Springs, Colorado, cheerleading academy has pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. The guilty plea was part of a plea deal in which he could spend eight years to life in prison. He could also get 20 years to life on intensive supervised probation for a sex offender. However, this means that he could end up in a community-based corrections program. He is due to be sentenced on May 18.

The case involves a 13-year-old girl who told police that the man raped her last May after he pinned her up against a wall. She stated that she had tried to push her coach away. The man claimed that the sex between the two was consensual. According to the arrest affidavit, he though she was older than 13 years of age.

The girl's mother informed police that the man declared his love for the girl in a message on her phone and talked about a "prospective engagement." He was arrested in June of last year. According to police, he wasn't working at the cheerleading academy any longer when he was arrested.

Sex crime charges are very difficult to face. In many instances, the media will portray someone charged with a sex crime as guilty before he or she even enters a courtroom. Because of the possible penalties, such as, for one, inclusion on the sex offender registry, it is important to discuss your possible defense strategies with your attorney as soon as possible.
