It is not uncommon for people who share living space to argue. Sometimes, these arguments can extremely tense. However, when things escalate from simple arguments to abuse (physical, verbal, emotional or sexual), then the law may step in.

Domestic violence is a serious offense with serious consequences. If you have been accused of domestic violence, it is important that you act swiftly to defend yourself. And while figuring out how to defend yourself, it is important that you avoid the following mistakes:

Discussing the matter on social media

Chances are you have one or more social media profiles. While you have the right to interact with your social media friends and followers as you wish, one of the mistakes you want to avoid is discussing a matter that is before the court on social media. Do not take to social media to make insinuations about your accuser, the court, the judge or the police. Don’t try to justify your actions or defend yourself in any way from gossip. Remember, what you say anywhere (including online) can be used against you in court.

Trying to reach out to your accuser

Once you have learned that you are facing a domestic violence charge, you might think you can talk things out with your accuser. You might think reaching out to them will help clear the misunderstanding. Unfortunately, it will not. Instead, this might be interpreted as an attempt to defeat justice through witness tampering. Reaching out to your accuser can only worsen an already grim situation.

A domestic violence accusation can ruin your reputation, career and even relationship with the people you care about. If you are accused of domestic violence, it is important that you explore your legal options in order to effectively defend yourself and safeguard your rights.
