Are some people actually good at drunk driving?

You may have heard someone brag about how good they are at driving under the influence. Maybe you were out at the bar together and you suggested that you should call a rideshare service so that you didn’t have to drive home. They waved it off and said that they were a great drunk driver so it would be safe to just head out.

Is there any basis to this type of claim? Are some people actually good at driving under the influence?

Alcohol impairs your judgment

Perhaps the biggest issue here is simply that alcohol impairs your judgment, which can lead to inaccurate assessments about your own ability to drive. That person may honestly believe that they can drive safely at the time, but that doesn’t mean that they’re correct. They may only think that because they’re intoxicated. There are many cases when people try to drive home and then massively regret their decision the next day, either because they got in an accident or because they got arrested.

Your friend may also simply be referring to the fact that they’ve had a lot of practice. Most people who get arrested on drunk-driving charges have driven under the influence before without getting caught. Perhaps your friend has done this so many times that they are unrealistically confident that they can do it again.

What if you make a mistake in judgment?

People do make mistakes. If you did something that you thought was safe and then you end up facing DUI charges, it’s time to start looking into your defense options. You do not have to let this one event define you.
